With the exception of a disgruntled old brawd who worked for United Airlines at Dallas Forth Worth airport and who clearly drank a whole gallon of stank juice this morning everyone I came in contact with today was exceptionally nice. To include the TSA workers who are more often than not rude as hell. It was almost like I was in the twilight zone or something. I had a layover in Houston and was dreading the flight to Guatemala City because there were no more window seats left and since I am ALWAYS asleep on a flight the isle seat doesn’t really work for me. I have been known to have my entire head in the isle while in a deep R.E.M. sleep. True story. The flight was good nonetheless despite the fact that the lady next to me bumrushed the armrests. I also managed to keep my big head out of the isle.
I will admit that I went to Guatemala without one single assumption of what it would be like there. Taking in to account that I have already slept on a straw mat on the ground in Thailand, peed in the middle of the Serengeti next to a scarcely leaved bush with a plastic faux penis-like apparatus, and had my big toe frozen (yes, it is still numb) stiff from -2384309830983209 weather atop Kilimanjaro….at this point there isn’t too much that will shock or surprise me. I was, however, surprised by the fact that there were a ton of people outside the airport and no one was shouting or begging. My driver was holding a sign with my name and whisked me off to La Antigua which was 45 minutes away. As we drove through the streets of Guatemala City and the neighboring cities I was surprised to see how clean it was in most places. Like a few steps away from sterile. The scenery was beautiful. From the architecture to the views of the mountains and volcanoes it just felt tranquil. Which is absolutely what I need right now.
I can already tell I’m going to love my time here. Stay tuned!!
