So I’ve recovered from my Kunta Kinte border fiasco by laying low on an island named Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand and indulging in $5-11 massages. I usually have a “I don’t travel to any location twice” rule which is why I originally left this Island off my list for this journey but since it only cost $30 to get here I figured I break my rule for once. I visited here before in 2008 while visiting a wellness resort and the experience was truly life changing. Or maybe I was just delirious because I was fasting and self administering a daily colonic during 90% of my trip. But whatever… Coming back the second time around doesn’t quite evoke the same exact feeling but it definitely feels familiar and comfortable. Although most of Koh Samui is much more touristy than the uninhabited Perhentians Islands in Malaysia it doesn’t exactly feel that way.
During the day most of the shops along Lamai beach where I’m staying are either closed or empty. Since it’s low season the place looks like a ghost town but when the sun goes down the area is bumpin. Loud music, bright lights, and tons of clothing shop, bar, and spa employees on deck to lure you into their spots.
*pausing while I mildly strangle the child sitting behind me in this van for recklessly popping on his giant wad of gum *
Since I saw a great deal of the island the last time I was here I decided to take an organized 6 hour tour to reach some of the places I’d missed. I’m actually on the tour van as i type heading to the first of eight attractions around the island.
Overall, I’m glad I came. The hostel is nice, the vibe is chill, and I’m feeling relaxed. I’m not sure how long I will stay beyond the 3 nights I’ve booked but I’ve been instructed by my Mom (my personal travel nurse) to stay a while longer so I can fix my sluggish bowel ( TMI…I know) situation and not kill myself for being backed up. Oh the joys of long term travel. An herbal laxative and a toilet scrubbed with my Clorox disinfectant wipes are calling my name.
